Where is Taman Negara? Where is Kuala Tembeling Jetty and Kuala Tahan?
Taman Negara is a vast track of virgin rain forest covers 4,343 square kilometers, spreading between the States of Pahang, Kelantan and Trengganu in Peninsular of Malaysia. It is situated between 4' and 5' north of the equator. Just over half of this area is in Pahang where the Park Headquarters was established at Kuala Tahan, the entry point to the Park.Kuala Tembeling is a small Malay village located in Jerantut District, the largest district in the State of Pahang. The only major town in Jerantut District is called Jerantut Town -- the gateway to Taman Negara. Kuala Tembeling Jetty is situated 16KM away from Jerantut Town through a winding & hilly road.Kuala Tembeling Jetty is where the tourists board a traditional long boat to Kuala Tahan via Tembeling River. The river journey is 60KM and it takes about 3 hours to reach Kuala Tahan.Kuala Tahan is the Park Headquarters. It is at Kuala Tahan that you will find accommodation, restaurants, sundry shops, police station, schools, health clinic and guiding services and etc.

2. How large is Taman Negara?
Taman Negara covers 4,343 square kilometers of virgin rain forests, about seven (7) times the size of Singapore Island or fourteen (14 ) times the size of Penang Island.

3. Is it really the oldest rainforest in the world? How old is it?
Yes, Taman Negara is recognized as one of the oldest rain forests in the world. It is about 130 million years old. Two other rain forests that are comparable in age are Amazon in South America and Congo in Africa.

4. Is it true that the Park is closed for tourists from November to January every year?Absolutely not true ! The Park is opened to the public throughout the year. The confusion arises probably because it was closed between November to January in the old days when the tourist arrival to Taman Negara was very few then. Since early 1990, after the construction of Taman Negera Resort ( now called Mutiara Taman Negera ), this practice was abolished. Another reason is that most of the old publications ( books, magazines, leaflets,… etc ) still mentioning the closure is in force, thus, created the confusion !

5. When is the peak season and when is the monsoon season?
According to the recent statistics, foreign visitors from Europe are still accounting slightly more than half of the annual 50,000 visitors to Taman Negara. The peak season for foreign visitors is during summer vacation break in Europe / northern hemisphere, i.e. June to September. As for the Malaysian and Singaporean visitors, all the public holidays, extended weekends and national school holidays are the peak periods. Bookings for peak season is heavy. If you wish to visit Taman Negara during the peak seasons, it is advisable to make booking at least 2-3 months ahead because of the limited accommodation there. In theory, the wet season commences in November and end in January every year. However the weather in Malaysia has changed a lot in recent years. Our experience indicated that heavy rain is only apparent by late December to mid-January due to the moon rain rains brought along by strong wind from South China Sea towards the interiors where Taman Negera is situated. Based on the past few year raining patterns, the heaviest rain and floods were registered around Christmas holidays ( December 25 ) and New Year Holidays.

6. I heard that there is a month where The Wildlife & National Parks ( Perhilitan ) declare it as July Fest or November Fest. Which one is correct?
Yes. November Fest is the correct one. Perhilitan organizes such Fest because November month is one of the lowest period in Taman Negera. It is hope that by promoting various kind of activities and programs such as bird race, Orang Asli cultural dance, blow pipe demonstration, mountain climbing race and etc would attract more visitors to Taman Negara.Unfortunately, such Fest had ceased to be organized in Kuala Tahan since 2000. Instead Perhilitan has shifted its venue to Sungai Relau in Merapoh, Kuala Lipis, another entry point to Taman Negara. The idea was to promote Sungai Relau in Merapoh as an alternative to Kuala Tahan.

7. What does PERHILITAN mean?
PERHILITAN (Jabatan Perlindungan Hidupan Liar dan Taman Negara ) is the abbreviation in Malay language for The Department of Wildlife and The National Park. It is the agency that administered and managed Taman Negara under The Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment of Malaysia.

8. Are children suitable to go to Taman Negara?
Yes. Children from age 3 and above are suitable to explore the nature in Taman Negara. In other words, as long as they are able to walk and do not require others to carry them during the jungle trekking and canopy walk, they are fit to visit Taman Negera! They will be very excited to see, touch, hear, smell and sometime even taste various kind of flora and fauna which are not available in the cities.

9. There must be a lot of mosquitoes! Is it true? Why?
Absolute NOT true! The mosquitoe' popular in Taman Negara are far less than those you could find in the cities. The reason is Taman Negara is preserved as an ecologically balanced rain forest and its environment was not disturbed since 130 millions years ago. As a result, the food chain, the population of the inhabitants in Taman Negara are controlled by the law of nature. For example, the number of mosquitoes in Taman Negara is controlled by other predators such as dragonflies, frogs, spiders and other insect eaters. The ecological chain in Taman Negara is preserved which made every species has room to survive and maintain a sustainable existence from generation to generation. Compared to the cities where human activities had destroyed the biological balance resulted in large numbers of mosquitoes, rats, cockroaches and etc that have no enemy to control their population !

10. A lot of leeches? Insects?
The answer is YES and NO. Leeches live in the wetland or lower ground such as mangrove area. Lowland forests tend to find a lot of leeches whereas higher ground will have less leeches or not even a single one. The popular trails around Kuala Tahan have very few leeches compared those that lead to interior of Taman Negara simply because most of the leeches had already "carried away" by the 50,000 tourists who visited The Park annually ! Yes, there are thousands of species of insect in Taman Negara. Many of them have yet to be discovered by the scientists !

11. How safe in Taman Negara? It is absolutely safe in Taman Negara !
The Malaysian statistics indicated that thousands of people die on road accidents each year but perhaps a few people die in the rain forests ! Of course, for city folks that have limited knowledge on the rain forests, it is advisable to engage the guiding services provided by many of the registered and qualified tour guides in Taman Negera. The guides not only make your stay in the rain forest more enjoyable and educational, they also ensure you are in a safe hand to avoid the danger such as flash floods.

12. Can I sight wild animals ? Tigers, elephants,?
Yes, some common wild animals that occasionally spotted by the tourists around The Park's Headquarters in Kuala Tahan are monkeys, monitor lizards, wild boars, barking deers( kijang ), sambar deers ( rusa ), mouse deers ( kancil ), horn bills and etc. However, larger wild animals such as tigers, elephants, black panthers, Malayan sun bears, tapirs, seladangs ( gaurs ) and etc are extremely difficult to spot because they are deep in the rain forest and avoiding human's presence. They could be heard but not often seen and you may come across their tracks and droppings if you venture deep into some of the interior trails.

13. Could I receive signals for my mobile phone in Jerantut, Kuala Tembeling Jetty, Kuala Tahan & Taman Negara ?
Yes. The surrounding of Kuala Tahan and Taman Negara are being covered by all mobile service providers. That is Maxis(012/017), Digi(014/016) and Celcom(013/019).

14. Are there any emergency contacts (police station, hospital, etc ) numbers that you could provide me with?
In case of an emergency, the following contacts are useful :-
Police Station in Kuala Tahan Village : (609)- 266 6721
Police Station in Jerantut Town : (609)- 266 2222c)
District Hospital in Jerantut Town : (609)- 266 3333d)
Mutiara Taman Negera Resort,
Kuala Tahan : (609)- 266 3500e)
Perhilitan Office at Kuala Tahan : (609)- 266 1122g)
Perhilitan Office at Kuala Tembeling Jetty : (609)- 266 2284

15. Are there any other entry points to Taman Negara, apart from the one in Kuala Tahan? Where are they and how different are they compared to Kuala Tahan?
There are all together 4 entry points to Taman Negara. The most popular and traditional one is at Kuala Tahan, Jerantut, Pahang - The Park's HQ. The second one is at Sungai Relau Station, Merapoh, Kuala Lipis, Pahang. The third one is at Kuala Koh Station, Gua Musang, Kelantan and the fourth one is at Tanjung Mentong Station via Tasik Kenyir in Terengganu. The infrastructures and facilities at Kuala Tahan are well established due to very long history, thus, more than 90 % of the tourists choose to visit there. However, Sungai Relau Station in Merapoh ( West side of The Park ) is getting more popular among the hikers who scale Mount Tahan (2187 meters), because it takes 3-4 days for a return trip to the summit from Sungai Relau Merapoh as compared to 7-8 days if one is to start from Kuala Tahan, situated at South East of The Park.Kuala Koh in Gua Musang is frequented mostly by the anglers to fish for the Kelah fish. Basic accommodation such as chalets and hostels are available in this station plus a restaurant that cater your daily meals.Tanjung Mentong is situated in the East side of The Park. It could only be accessed via Tasik Kenyir by speed boat from Pengkalan Gawi in Terengganu. Since it is very difficult to reach this point, thus, very few visitors enter The Park from here.

16. When is the durian season? I heard Jerantut have good durians!
The durian season varies in recent years. The usual period is between July to September. Yes, there are good durians in Jerantut ! One of the most popular plantation resorts in Malaysia called Tekam Plantation Resort is situated in Jerantut.

TIPS AND ADVICE :

1.
